Odpowiedź na to pytanie jest niezwykle złożona. Większość  biblijnych komentatorów uważa ,że Gog z Magog opisany w księdze Ezechiela w zależności od kontekstu (genealogiczny,eschatologiczny , apokaliptyczny) może przedstawiać:osobę ,naród lub krainę geograficzną.Jedna z wielu interpretacji głosi ,że określenie Magog podobnie jak Szeszak czy Leb-Kamaj może odnosić się do Babilonu (Słownik bóstw i demonów w Biblii; p.536;Karel van der Toorn , Bob Becking , Pietera van der Horst W). W dziele” Funk and Wagnalls New Standard Bible Dictionary”, 1936, s.307 podano ,że kraina Magog to symbol „świata wrogiego ludowi i królestwu Bożemu” .

Były doradca polityczny izraelskiego premiera Beniamina Netanjahu autor
książki “The Gog and Magog War” która przez pewien czas utrzymywała się na
liście bestsellerów w “New York Times”, Joel Rosenberg, uważa ,że spełnienie się scenariusza proroctw nakreślonych w 38 i 39 rozdziale księgi Ezechiela odnosi się do ataku na Izrael przeprowadzonego przez koalicję narodów, w tym Rosję i Iran.

Według jego interpretacji , Gog identyfikowany jest jako

„Samorealizujące się ” proroctwa biblijne mające wpływ na światowe wydarzenia związane są z mesjanizmem. Definicja podana w Wikipedii podaje ,że samospełniające się proroctwo (samorealizująca się przepowiednia) to (…)zjawisko polegające na tym, że określone oczekiwania w stosunku do pewnych zachowań lub zdarzeń wpływają na te zachowania lub zdarzenia w sposób, który powoduje spełnienie oczekiwań. Samospełniające się proroctwa występują wówczas,gdy informacja o mającym się zdarzyć incydencie pochodzi z wiarygodnego dla jednostek źródła i pod wpływem tej informacji jednostki postępują w taki sposób, że realizują w końcu treść przepowiedni. Przykładem samospełniającego się proroctwa może być np. plotka o tym, że dany bank w najbliższym czasie z powodu problemów finansowych

Do państw występujących w opozycji do Izraela oprócz Rosji zaliczyć można Chiny i Koreę Północną. Wymienione państwa należą do tzw. mocarstw atomowych (Korea Północna pierwszą próbę przeprowadziła 9 października 2006 ).

Jednakże Korea Północna nie ratyfikowała “Traktatu o całkowitym zakazie prób z bronią jądrową” z 24 września 1996 zakładający całkowity zakaz przeprowadzania prób nuklearnych.Również Indie, i Pakistan nie złożyły swych podpisów. Łącznie traktat podpisany został przez 177 państw,z czego 138 go ratyfikowało. Co ciekawe jeśli chodzi o Koreę
Północną to w 2003 roku wystąpiła ona z układu o nierozprzestrzenianiu broni
jądrowej .Podobnie postąpi Iran gdy “może nie mieć wyboru i być zmuszonym do wypowiedzenia układu o nierozprzestrzenianiu broni jądrowej (ang. NPT)”
takie oświadczenie padło z ust przewodniczącego Rady Bezpieczeństwa Narodowego Iranu Ali Laridżani, który jest głównym irańskim negocjatorem
ds.nuklearnych.Swoje stanowisko Iran uzależnia od tego czy kraje zachodnie
rozpoczną operację wojskową przeciw Syrii, jeśli tak to to Iran uderzy na Izrael .Aby jednak doszło do interwencji wojskowej w Syrii ,oczywiście pod warunkiem, że zostanie ona przeprowadzona zgodnie z prawem międzynarodowym, czyli po decyzji RB ONZ , należałoby przekonać Chiny i Rosję kraje z ” najdalszych stron północy “(Ezechiela 38:3-6) .Pytanie brzmi co w zamian za zgodę na wojskową interwencję w Syrii będą miały Rosja i Chiny ?

Istnieje jeszcze tzw.” aspekt moralny” ,otóż Iran(po II wojnie w Zatoce Perskiej rozpoczął się tzw.proces demokratyzacji Bliskiego Wschodu) oraz Pakistan oskarżone są o popieranie terroryzmu nuklearnego (“oś zła” – Irak Libia,Syria,Iran ,Pakistan ,Korea Północna) . Z listy krajów należących do “osi zła”skreślone zostały : Irak i Libia .Pozostały: Liban ,Syria , Iran,Pakistan oraz wysunięta daleko na północny wschód Korea Północna . Moim zdaniem tzw.”demokratyzacja” ,”liberalizacja”,”rozbrojenie ” ,”oś zła” etc…etc … są to elementy wykorzystywane w wojnie cywilizacyjnej która ma na celu transformacje całego społeczeństwa ludzkiego w taki sposób by zaakceptowało ….GoGa*** (ang: Global Occupation Government ) .

***demokratyzacja*** – to system indoktrynacji oparty na przemianach
społecznych a także mechanizm transformacji ustrojowej państw w którym następuje odradzenie się parlamentaryzmu i reaktywowanie samorządu
terytorialnego .Demokratyzację najczęściej poprzedza liberalizacja*** (Holandia:Getta dla przeciwników zboczeńców i cudzoziemców ; na podstawie na PAP ; artykuł z dn.2013-01-19).

 Ale co to jest GOG?
GOG to globalny system zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi obejmujący kształtowanie i kontrolę umysłu i serc  całej populacji ludzkiej organizowany przez “bestie czasu końca”(mocarstwa światowe ) . System ten odzwierciedla osobowość i zasady twórcy tego systemu -Szatana Diabła. System ten wywiera przemożny wpływ i nacisk na każdego człowieka. Im bliżej” końca tego systemu rzeczy” tym coraz większe nadzorowanie poczynań, procesów zachodzących na wszystkich płaszczyznach życia całych społeczeństw .Credo owego systemu brzmi :”bez rodziny, własności,prawdy , wolności i wiary ” i nawiązuje do  zerwania z tradycyjnym pojęciem rodziny ,własności ,prawdy,wolności i wiary.

Według teorii geopolitycznej politologa Samuela Huntingtona („Zderzenie cywilizacji i nowy kształt ładu światowego” ;1996) obecnie mamy do czynienia z konfliktem cywilizacji. Huntington twierdzi, że może dochodzić do poważnych konfliktów pomiędzy poszczególnymi cywilizacjami.Wymienia te cywilizacje ale dziwnym trafem pomija tę odrodzoną w XVIII wieku – cywilizacje żydowską.
Lista cywilizacji: brak  odradzającej  się cywilizacji żydowskiej !

• zachodnia – obejmująca Europę Zachodnią i część Wschodniej,prawie cała Ameryka Północna (bez Antyli, Meksyku, Ameryka Środkowa),Australia, Nowa Zelandia, Papua-Nowa Gwinea, Surinam, Gujana Francuska, północne Filipiny .

Politolog Samuel Huntington (…) dowodzi, że w okresie po zakończeniu zimnej wojny, kiedy to przyczyną konfliktów były  spory ideologiczne, na pierwsze miejsce powrócą spory kulturowe. Uważa on ponadto, że Cywilizacja Zachodu systematycznie traci swoje wpływy we współczesnym świecie.Aby zapobiec jej marginalizacji, musi dojść do pojednania i ściślejszej współpracy dwóch najważniejszych ogniw tej cywilizacji – Europy i Stanów Zjednoczonych ( Dan 2:41-45). Według Huntingtona priorytetem współczesnej polityki międzynarodowej powinno być zażegnywanie konfliktów na granicach cywilizacji (na przykład pomiędzy Izraelem a Palestyńczykami).

Teoria ta jest często wspominana zwłaszcza islam po zamachach terrorystycz- -nych z 11 września 2001 roku   ale moim zdaniem nie ukazuje prawdziwego oblicza tej wojny. Chcąc je poznać musimy sięgnąć po Biblię( Dan 2 : 36-45;Dan 4:23-25 ; Dan 8 : 19-26; Dan 11:2 – 45 ; Dan 12:1 – 13; Obj 12:7-10 ) . W ujęciu proroctw zawartych w księdze Daniela „potomstwo ludzkie” , symboliczna glina przedstawia system “demokratycznych rządów” w którym większy wpływ na sprawowanie władzy mieli wywierać zwykli ludzie.Jak podaje wikipedia, demokracja (stgr.δημοκρατία demokratia “rządy ludu”, od wyrazów δῆμος demos “lud”, rozumiany jako ogół pełnoprawnych obywateli +κρατέω krateo “rządzę”)to ustrój polityczny, w którym źródło władzy stanowi wola większości obywateli (sprawują oni rządy bezpośrednio lub za pośrednictwem przedstawicieli). Obecnie powszechną formą ustroju demokratycznego jest demokracja parlamentarna. Gwarantem istnienia demokracji parlamentarnej jest konstytucja (wyjątkiem są Izrael oraz Wielka Brytania, nieposiadające konstytucji spisanej w jednym akcie). Demokracja ma swój początek w Starożytnej Grecji . W znaczący wkład w jej rozwój ma także kultura Starożytnego Rzymu oraz kultura Zachodu (Europa, Ameryka Północna i Południowa ) w tym cywilizacja żydowska w ręku której znajduje się prywatny przemysł bankowy. Demokracja jest ostatnią formą rządów, wymienioną w Biblii( Dan 2 : 36-45 ; Dan 4: 23-25 ; Dan 8 : 19-26; Dan 11:2 – 45 ; Dan 12:1 – 13).

Pierwsza fala demokracji miała miejsce po zakończeniu I wojny światowej (powstanie LNZ) ,druga po zakończeniu II wojny światowej (Powstanie ONZ ,utworzenie państwa Izrael ;Unie gospodarczo-polityczno-walutowe) .Trzecia fala rozpoczęła się w roku 1989 (Europa Wschodnia,pierestrojka. Podstawowe zasady pierestrojki określił Gorbaczow w książce pt.: “Przebudowa i nowe myślenie dla naszego kraju i dla całego świata” opublikowana w 1988 ) ,czwarta fala w 2010 i swym zasięgiem objęła poszczególne (wchodzące lub mogące wejść w skład tzw.osi zła) kraje Bliskiego Wschodu.Demokracja globalna (proces integracji cywilizacyjnej oparty na indoktrynacji  struktury myślowej jednostki.)

Ta z klei  zależna jest od struktury społecznej. Jednym z narzędzi umożliwiający transformację społeczeństw jest multikulturowość . Staje się ona zjawiskiem pospolitym przełamującym wszelkie uprzedzenia na korzyść “mniejszości” w tym również związków jednopłciowych).

Pierwszym krokiem demokracji globalnej ma być ustanowienie powszechnego
pokoju – Pax Universa ; (1 Tesaloniczan 5:1-3; 2Tymoteusza 3:1- 5 ; 13; ).

Celem tzw.demokracji globalnej jest wypracowanie i wprowadzenie
wspólnych standardów :

a) standardu bezpieczeństwa

b) standardu jakości życia

c)standardu zrównoważonego rozwoju

d)standardu wykształcenia i infrastruktury naukowo-technicznej

W rzeczywistości jednak prawdziwym celem tzw. demokracji globalnej   jest
utrzymanie przy władzy elity prywatnego przemysłu bankowego poprzez
zastąpienie dotychczasowego systemu rezerwy ułamkowej na system rezerwy stuprocentowej (projekt McAndrewsa  “The Narrow Bank” ; moja kursywa 2020 )

Skąd taki wniosek?
Wniosek ten wynika z analizy proroctw biblijnych zawartych w księdze Daniela. O ile , jeśli chodzi o proroctwa z 38 i 39 rozdziału księgi Ezechiela , można określić je mianem„samospełniających się proroctw biblijnych”(elity ze świata nauki ,polityki ,biznesu ,religii tak kreują rzeczywistość aby stanowiła potwierdzenie zawartych w biblii mesjańskich proroctw) to proroctwa z księgi Daniela już nie kwalifikują jako „samospełniające się proroctwa” ponieważ spełnienie ich nie wypływa z woli i starań człowieka lecz z woli Jehowy Boga(…)ze względu na prawdomówność Boga, aby potwierdzić obietnice, które On dał ich praojcom, 9 i aby narody wychwalały Boga za jego miłosierdzie (Rzymian 15:8, 9;Obj 4:11) .Zwróćmy uwagę na słowa zapisane w Ezechiela 38:3-6 : (…)I powiedz: ‚Tak rzekł Wszechwładny Pan, Jehowa: „Oto jestem przeciwko tobie, Gogu, główny naczelniku Meszechu i Tubalu . 4 I niechybnie cię zawrócę, i włożę haki w twoje szczęki, i wyprowadzę ciebie z całym twym wojskiem, końmi i jeźdźcami, wszystkich gustownie odzianych, liczny zbór, z wielką tarczą i puklerzem, a wszyscy oni władają mieczem; 5 z nimi Persję, Etiopię i Put — tych wszystkich z puklerzem i hełmem; 6 Gomer i wszystkie jego hufce, dom Togarmy z najdalszych stron północy i wszystkie jego hufce,wiele ludów z tobą.”(…) .

Większość biblijnych interpretatorów w trzecim wersecie 38 rozdziału księgi Ezechiela upatruje Rosjan .Wniosek taki wyciągnięto na podstawie tłumaczenia hebrajskiego słowo„rosz” co brzmi jak współczesna nazwa Rosja .Potwierdzenie tego podglądu wynikać ma z kolejnych wersetów w których określenie z ” najdalszych stron północy “ponoć ma wskazywać na to ,że chodzi tu o Rosję która leży daleko na północ od Izraela. Ale czy na pewno? Narody ” z najdalszych stron północy ” nacierające na Izrael wymienione w Ezechiela 38:3-6 obejmują zjednoczona armię złożoną z wielu narodów wśród których być może znajdą się również te które leżą na północnym wschodzie od Jerozolimy.

Ale określenie z ” najdalszych stron północy ” może odnosić się do symbolicznego miejsca pobytu Jehowy wśród Izraelitów (Ps 48:1,2; Iz 14:13,14); (…) Wielki jest Jehowa i nader godzien wysławiania w mieście naszego Boga, na jego świętej górze.  Śliczna w swej wzniosłości, radosnym uniesieniem całej ziemi jest góra Syjon w dalekich stronach północy, gród Wspaniałego Króla.(…). Wobec takiej interpretacji
i proroctwa o Gogu nabierają całkiem innego znaczenia.

(…)W tekście masoreckim słowa „główny książę” noszą akcent Tiphha i Zaqeph-gadol. Tiphha pojawia się pod spółgłoską resz w hebrajskim słowie „rosz”; zaqeph-gadol umiejscowione jest u góry spółgłoski szin w słowie „nisz”. Tiphha po prawej stronie, pod pierwszą spółgłoską słowa „rosz”, lub dowódca, ma charakter przyimka i nie akcentuje sylaby. Słowo„nisz”, lub książę, posiada akcent zaqeph-gadol który jest rozłączający i wskazuje pauzę. (…). Zdania są podzielone ,jedni uważają ,że „rosz” powinno być tłumaczone jako nazwa własna ze wskazaniem na Rosję jako części koalicji która ma dokonać inwazji na Izrael. Drudzy uważają ,że nie chodzi o nazwę, lecz o składnik tytułu, stąd słusznie gdzie indziej “rosz” jest tłumaczony na: „główny naczelnik” (NŚ),„naczelny książę” (Bp), „wielki książę” (BT), „główny książę” (Bw), „wielki władca” (BWP).

Do koalicji zawiązanej przeciwko Izraelowi prorok Ezechiel wymienia
Togarmę która znajduje się wśród sprzymierzeńców Goga z Magog wywodzących się z „najdalszych stron północy” (Eze 38:6).Czy Togarma to Ormianie o których pisali starożytni grecy ,że słyną z koni i mułów (Eze 27:2, 14)? Być może tak. Inna wersja interpretacji 6 wersu 38 rozdziału księgi Ezechiela być może odnosi się do miasta w Kapadocji (obecnie Turcja) znanego w czasach Ezechiela jako Tegarma, Tagarma, Til-garimmu lub Takarama.Pogląd ten stanowi argument przemawiający  za tym ,że obecnie Turcja jest jedną
ze stron biorących udział w inwazji na Izrael

Do koalicji przeciw Izraelowi dołączona jest również Persja (dzisiejszy Iran) Ezechiela 38:5 . W czasach Ezechiela Persja była wschodzącym mocarstwem światowym które pokonało imperium nowobalilońskie (Dan 2:31-45;) . Z czasem i ona została pokonana przez kolejno następujące po sobie mocarstwa światowe przepowiedziane w Biblii (Dan 8:3-7 ;Dan 8 : 19- 26; Dan 11:2 – 45 ; Dan 12:1 – 13 ) .Różne są  spojrzenia na tożsamość narodów o których mowa jest w Ezechiela 38:1-7 : Rosz jako Rosja lub starożytni Sarmaci znani jako Raszu, Rasapu, Ros i Rus albo “rosz” tłumaczone jako przymiotnik  oznaczający “główny.

• Magog jako Centralna Azja dawniej określeniem Magog nazywano starożytnych Scytów .Nazwa „Scyta” może pochodzić od imienia jednego z potomków Jafeta, Aszkenaza (Rdz 10:23).Encyclopædia Britannica podaje, że „w całej literaturze klasycznej Scytia zwykle oznacza wszystkie krainy leżące na północ i północny wschód od Morza Czarnego.*** it-1 s. 1242 ak. 6 Magog (…)„Scyta” — podobnie jak w późniejszych czasach „Tatar” — było dość  pojemne i odnosiło się na ogół do koczowniczych plemion mieszkających na pn. od Kaukazu (obszaru górskiego między Morzem Czarnym i Kaspijskim). Dlatego w pewnej encyklopedii powiedziano: „Nazwa ‚Scyta’ miała dla starożytnych obszerne znaczenie i to samo można powiedzieć o hebrajskim słowie ‚Magog’ ” ; The New Schaff-Herzog Encyclopedia of Religious Knowledge, red. Według komentatorów biblijnych Szeba i Dedan to starożytna nazwa dzisiejszej Arabii Saudyjskiej. Dynastia Saudyjska panująca w Arabii Saudyjskiej, założona przez Muhammada ibn Sa’uda (1744-1765) jest jedynym państwem arabskim które konsekwentnie wspiera w działaniach zachodnią Europę przeciwko radykalnym islamskim elementom na świecie. W czasie I wojny w Zatoce
Perskiej na początku 1990 Arabia Saudyjska zostaje sojusznikiem USA przeciwko Irakowi, podczas gdy Rosja, Syria ,Iran ,Liban jednoczą się przeciwko USA i Izraelowi .  Według niektórych komentatorów wersety 19 i 20 mówią o mającym nastąpić trzęsieniu ziemi którego siła wstrząsu odczuwalna będzie na całym świecie . W następującym po nim chaosie, narody zaczną obracać się jeden przeciwko drugiemu. W zamieszaniu, zginą wszyscy sprzymierzeńcy Goga z Magog .Miary spustoszenia dokonają plagi, ulewne deszcze, grad i płonąca siarka. Po raz kolejny Bóg pokaże wszystkim narodom, że On jest (Daniela 2:47) (…) Bogiem bogów i Panem królów,(…) działającym dla dobra Izraela -narodu wybranego .

Ale mnie osobiście taka interpretacja proroctw dotyczących Goga z Magog (teoria Królestwa Haszymidów ;teoria kliki (caucus); teoria całej Europy; teoria rosyjska ; teoria indo-europejska) nie przekonuje. Skłonna jestem uznać tezę , że Gog przedstawiony w 38 i 39 rozdziale księgi Ezechiela GOG(ang: Global Occupation  Government ) to globalny system zarządzania zasobami ludzkimi obejmujący kształtowanie i kontrolę umysłu i serc całej populacji ludzkiej organizowany przez “bestie czasu końca”(mocarstwa światowe ) . System ten odzwierciedla osobowość i zasady twórcy tego systemu -Szatana Diabła.System ten wywiera przemożny wpływ i nacisk na każdego człowieka.Im bliżej”końca tego systemu rzeczy” tym coraz większe nadzorowanie poczynań, procesów zachodzących na wszystkich płaszczyznach życia całych społeczeństw .System ten burzy tradycyjne pojęcie rodziny ,własności,prawdy ,wolności i wiary dlatego credo owego systemu brzmi :”bez rodziny,własności,prawdy , wolności i wiary “.

Podstawa tego systemu została utworzona w XVIII wieku . John Law stworzył system rezerwy ułamkowej który z czasem stał się główną przyczyną obecnego kryzysu światowego (Mat 244:21;2 Tym 3:1-5,13;Obj 13:18 ). System rezerwy ułamkowej polegał na zastąpieniu powszechnie stosowanych monet opartych na parytecie złota ,pieniądzem papierowym opartym na zaufaniu.Zaletą tego systemu było to ,że papierowe pieniądze można było drukować w nieskończoność i było to zdecydowanie tańsze niż produkcja monet kruszcowych.

Rozwiązanie jakie zaproponował John Law w późniejszym okresie umożliwiło rozwój rewolucji przemysłowej na całym świecie. Ale nie tylko … System rezerwy ułamkowej przyczynił się od powstania prężnie działającego prywatnego przemysłu bankowego którego lwia część zysków pochodziła między innymi z finansowania wojen i rewolucji ,obalania rządów , burzenia starych narodów , tworzenia nowych państw ,nowych gospodarek ,nowych korporacji i nowych społeczeństw ludzkich akceptujących istniejący stan rzeczy. (…)Do wczesnych lat XX wieku banki drukowały swoje własne papierowe pieniądze z własną nazwą na każdym banknocie w zamian za własne rezerwy złota i wypożyczały je rządowi i społeczeństwu w formie oprocentowanego kredytu który funkcjonował jako dług narodowy . Metoda kreacji pieniądza Johna Lawa polegająca na zastąpieniu monety prostym narodowym systemem kredytu i debetu ,spowodowała ,że całkowite zadłużenie narodowe i prywatne utrzymuje się na wyższym poziomie niż ilość pieniędzy zdolnych do jego spłacenia. System ten wymaga albo stałego niekończącego się wzrostu gospodarczego albo stanięcia twarzą w twarz z chaosem totalnego załamania gospodarczego (System monetarny na Nowe Tysiącleci). Wszystko wskazuje na to, że stoimy w obliczu chaosu totalnego załamania gospodarczego politycznego i religijnego. System monetarny z Brentton Woods i Brentton Woods II doprowadził do upadku państw narodowych ( czego jesteśmy obecnie świadkami) na rzecz ponadnarodowych korporacji takich jak Unia Europejska ,CBE, ONZ,Bank Światowy, MFW , FED czy City of London który jest Wielką Macierzą świata finansów i nakłania narody do przyjęcia tzw. Pax Judaica (Izrael Mesjaszem Narodów) ; Pax Americana  jako  Project for the New American Century (PNAC), czyli Projekt dla Nowego Amerykańskiego Wieku (1 Tes 5:3 ).

Hammurabi, król Babilonu i darowanie długów

Kodeks Hammurabiego znajduje się w Luwrze, w paryskim muzeum. Określenie ‘kodeks’ jest niewłaściwe, ponieważ to, co Hammurabi nam pozostawił, to raczej zespół reguł i sądów na temat relacji pomiędzy władzą publiczną a obywatelami. Hammurabi rozpoczął swoje 42-letnie panowanie jako król Babilonu (w dzisiejszym Iraku) w roku 1792 pne. Większość podręczników historii nie wspomina o tym, że podobnie jak inni rządcy miast-państw w Mezopotamii Hammurabi zaczął od oficjalnego zniesienia długów wszystkich obywateli wobec rządu, wysokich dygnitarzy i możnych w państwie. Tzw. Kodeks Hammurabiego jest datowany na rok 1762 pne. W swym zakończeniu głosi tak : « Niechaj możni nie uciskają słabych. Prawo musi chronić wdowy i sieroty (…) tak aby uciskani mieli sprawiedliwość »  Wiele starożytnych dokumentów odczytanych z tabliczek klinowych pozwoliło też historykom ustalić ponad wszelką wątpliwość, że za panowania Hammurabiego miały miejsce cztery wielkie darowania długów w latach 1792, 1780, 1771 i 1762.

W czasach Hammurabiego życie społeczne, gospodarcze i polityczne było zorganizowane wokół świątyni i wokół pałacu. Te dwie blisko ze sobą splecione instytucje ze swymi licznymi pracownikami, rzemieślnikami i – rzecz jasna – skrybami, stanowiły aparat państwa, co właściwie nie różni się zasadniczo i od dzisiejszej struktury władzy. Świątynia i pałac zapewniały swoim pracownikom wyżywienie i zakwaterowanie: zwykle otrzymywali oni racje żywnościowe będące odpowiednikiem dwóch pełnych posiłków dziennie. Chłopom użyczano działek ziemi, które im wynajmowano, zapewniano narzędzie, woły pociągowe, zwierzęta do hodowli, ziarno siewne i wodę do nawadniania, tak żeby mogli produkować żywność na potrzeby robotników i dygnitarzy. Oprócz ziemi dzierżawionej, wielu chłopów miało też swoją własną ziemię, narzędzia, trzodę itp. Kiedy zbiory były marne, narastał im dług. Dług pojawiał się także, gdy zaciągali prywatnie pożyczki, jakich udzielali im wysocy urzędnicy i dygnitarze państwa, łasi by się szybko wzbogacić i zająć chłopski majątek w razie niewypłacalności. Jeśli wieśniacy nie byli w stanie spłacić długu, mogli się znaleźć w sytuacji sług lub niewolników, podobnie jak członkowie ich rodzin. W celu zapewnienia pokoju społecznego i stabilności, a zwłaszcza po to, aby uchronić chłopów przed pogarszaniem się ich warunków życia, władze co pewien czas stosowały unieważnienie wszystkich długów i przywracały pierwotne prawa chłopów. Jest przy tym ciekawe, że takie powszechne darowanie długów nigdy nie dotyczyło długów między kupcami.

Powszechne anulacje długów w Mezopotamii przez 1000 lat

Ogłaszanie ogólnego darowania długów zaczęło się więc na długo przed panowaniem Hammurabiego i trwało również po nim. Są dowody takiej anulacji długów w 2400 roku pne., czyli sześćset lat przed panowaniem Hammurabiego, w mieście Lagasz w Sumerze. Najnowszy stwierdzony przypadek to rok 1400 pne. w mieście Nuzi. Ogółem historycy stwierdzili z całą pewnością około trzydziestu powszechnych anulacji długów w okresie 2400-1400 pne. Michael Hudson słusznie twierdzi, że powszechne darowania długów były jedną z najbardziej charakterystycznych cech w społeczeństwach epoki brązu w Mezopotamii. W rzeczywistości znamy wiele mezopotamskich terminów, którymi określano taką anulację:  amargi w Lagasz, nig-sisa w Ur Chaldejskim, andurarum w Aszur, miszarum w Babilonie, szudutu w Nuzi.

Takie ogłaszanie darowania długów następowało z okazji wielkich uroczystości, zwykle podczas wiosennych obchodów Nowego Roku. Za panowania dynastii rodu Hammurabiego zapoczątkowano tradycję masowego tłuczenia glinianych tabliczek z zapisem długów. Normalnie w świątyni władze przechowywały ścisłe zapisy takiego jakby zaprzysiężonego długu. Kiedy Hammurabi zmarł w 1749 roku po 42 latach panowania, jego następca Szamsuiluna zniósł wszystkie długi wobec państwa i nakazał zniszczenie wszystkich tabliczek dłużnych z wyjątkiem tych, które dotyczyły długów zaprzysiężonych przez kupców. 

Pierwsza powszechna anulacja długów ogłoszona przez Ammisadukkę, ostatniego władcę z dynastii Hammurabiego, który zasiadł na tronie w roku 1646 pne., była bardzo szczegółowa, wyraźnie po to by zapobiec wykorzystywaniu ewentualnych luk prawnych przez wierzycieli. Dekret anulacyjny postanawiał, że wierzyciele oficjalni i poborcy podatkowi, którzy wywłaszczyli chłopów za długi, mają im dać odszkodowanie i zwrócić im ich pierwotną własność pod rygorem egzekucji. Jeśli wierzyciel zajął własność dłużnika przemocą, i teraz nie chce jej oddać lub spłacić w całości, czeka go kara śmierci.    

Z mocy tego dekretu utworzono komisje w celu rewizji wszystkich umów dotyczących nieruchomości i unieważnienia tych, które podpadały pod anulację długów, z myślą o przywróceniu stanu pierwotnego, status quo ante. Egzekucja tego dekretu była o tyle łatwiejsza, że wywłaszczeni chłopi z reguły nadal pracowali na tej samej ziemi, nawet jeśli stała się ona już własnością wierzyciela. Poprzez unieważnienie takich kontraktów i nakazanie wierzycielom odszkodowania ich ofiarom, władza przywracała prawa chłopów. Trochę ponad 200 lat później ich sytuacja miała się jednak zmienić na gorszą.

Ograniczenia w darowaniu długów

W epoce brązu w Mezopotamii ci, którzy popadli w niewolę za długi byli wyzwalani, w odróżnieniu od innych kategorii niewolników, np. jeńców wojennych. Niemniej, na darowanie długów nie należy patrzeć jako na rodzaj emancypacji społecznej. Było to po prostu sposób przywracania wcześniej istniejącego porządku społecznego, zakłóconego przez różne formy ucisku. Nie pragnąc wybielać porządków społecznych w tych społeczeństwach 3000-4000 lat temu, trzeba jednak zauważyć, że ich władcy dążyli do utrzymania spójności społecznej zapobiegając powstawaniu wielkich domen prywatnych i podejmowali kroki ku temu, aby ziemia należała do tego, kto ją bezpośrednio uprawia. Ograniczali wzrost nierówności dbając zarazem o rozwój i utrzymywanie systemów irygacyjnych. Michael Hudson twierdzi ponadto, że decyzje o wypowiedzeniu wojny były podejmowane przez zgromadzenie ogólne obywateli. Król sam nie miał prawa takich decyzji podejmować.

Wydaje się także, iż mieszkańcy Mezopotamii w epoce brązu nie wierzyli w boskie stworzenie jako zasadę wyjaśniającą życie na ziemi. W obliczu chaosu władca sam reorganizował świat, aby ustanowić normalny porządek i sprawiedliwość.

Po 1400 pne. nie ma świadectw dalszego znoszenia długów. Nierówności społeczne wzmogły się i narastały. Ziemia przeszła w ręce wielkich obszarników i niewola za długi stała się powszechna. Duża część ludności wyemigrowała na północny zachód, do Kanaanu i ku niezadowoleniu faraonów dokonywała też wejść do Egiptu. Następne stulecia znane są historykom Mezopotamii jako „Wieki Ciemne” z uwagi na skąpość materiałów pisanych. Mamy jednak dowody na gwałtowne walki społeczne miedzy dłużnikami a wierzycielami.

 

Egipt: Kamień z Rosetty potwierdza tradycje oddłużania

Kamień z Rosetty, przywieziony przez armie Napoleona w 1799 roku w czasie kampanii egipskiej, został odczytany w roku 1822 przez Jean-Francois Champolliona. Dziś znajduje się w Muzeum Brytyjskim w Londynie. Jego przetłumaczenie było ułatwione przez fakt, że na kamieniu jest ten sam tekst w trzech językach i pismach: starożytnym egipskim, egipskim demotycznym i greckim z czasów Aleksandra Wielkiego. 

Tekst potwierdza, że tradycja unieważniania długów była podtrzymywana w Egipcie przez faraonów od VIII wieku pne., zanim Aleksander Wielki podbił Egipt w IV wieku pne. Opowiada o tym, że w roku 196 pne. faraon Ptolemeusz V zniósł wszystkie długi w Egipcie i poza nim z okazji swego wstąpienia na tron. 

Mimo wielkich różnic pomiędzy społeczeństwem Egiptu faraonów i Mezopotamii z epoki brązu, istnieją dowody, że w obu istniała tradycja ogłaszania także amnestii  przed ogólnym darowaniem długów. Ramzes IV (1153-1146 pne.) ogłosił np., że ci którzy uciekli z kraju mogą powrócić, a ci którzy byli w więzieniach, aby byli wypuszczeni. Jego ojciec Ramzes III (1184-1153 pne.) zrobił wcześniej to samo. Tu zauważmy, że drugie tysiąclecie pne. nie wydaje być w Egipcie czasem, w którym w niewolę popadało się za długi: właściwie wszyscy niewolnicy byli zdobyczą wojenną. Edykty Ramzesa III i Ramzesa IV dotyczyły zatem unieważnienia wszelkich zaległości podatkowych należnych państwu (faraonowi), amnestię dla więźniów politycznych oraz możliwość powrotu banitów i uchodźców do kraju. Dopiero w VIII wieku pne. znajdujemy w Egipcie edykt o darowaniu długów cywilnych i wyzwoleniu niewolników za długi. Taki edykt wydał faraon Bokchoris (717-711 pne.)

Jednym z podstawowych motywów darowania długów było to, ze faraon chciał mieć do dyspozycji chłopstwo zdolne zarówno do produkowania obfitości żywności jak też i do powołania pod broń w przypadku wypraw i potrzeb wojennych. Z tych dwóch powodów było dla niego ważne, aby chronić chłopów przed wywłaszczaniem przed wierzycieli.

W sąsiedniej Asyrii władcy z I tysiąclecia pne. również przyjęli tradycje darowania długów, podobnie jak królowie jerozolimscy w V wieku pne. W roku 432 pne. Nehemiasz, bez wątpienia pod wpływem starej tradycji mezopotamskiej, ogłosił darowanie długów wszystkim Żydom, którzy winni byli pieniądze swoim bogatszym współwyznawcom. Było to dokładnie w czasie, gdy napisano Torę. Tradycja takiego ogólnego odpuszczania długów jest integralną częścią religii żydowskiej i wczesnych tekstów chrześcijańskich, poprzez Księgę Kapłańską, która nakazuje darowania długów co siedem lat, oraz w każdym roku jubileuszowym tj. co pięćdziesiąt lat.

Wnioski

W dobie obecnej spłata długów stała się tematem tabu. Głowy państw, szefowie rządów, banki centralne, Międzynarodowy Fundusz Walutowy i media, wszyscy oni przedstawiają długi tak, jak gdyby ich spłata była nieunikniona, niepodlegająca dyskusji i obowiązkowa. Obywatele muszą się zgodzić na to, aby koniecznie spłacać wszystkie długi. Jedyna możliwa dyskusja skupia się na tym jak rozłożyć brzemię spłaty niezbędne dla uwolnienia dostatecznych rezerw budżetowych dla wypełnienia zobowiązań zadłużonego kraju. Argumentuje się, że rządy, które się zapożyczyły były wybrane demokratycznie, więc ich działania mają sankcję prawną i są obowiązujące. Dług musi być spłacony.

Musimy zdjąć tę zasłonę z wierzycieli i przywrócić historyczną prawdę. Wielkie, ogólne darowania długów były w historii uchwalane wielokrotnie. Takie amnestie długów odpowiadają różnym kontekstom historycznym. W przypadkach, które wspomniano wyżej, ogłaszanie darowania długów następowało z inicjatywy władców, którzy troszczyli się o zachowanie pokoju społecznego. W niektórych przypadkach darowania długów następowały w wyniku niepokojów i walk społecznych zaostrzonych przez kryzys ekonomiczny i wzrost nierówności majątkowych.Tak było w przypadku starożytnej Grecji i Rzymu. Można też przewidzieć inne scenariusze, jak np. zniesienie długów przez kraje zadłużone, które decydują się na jednostronne ogłoszenie niepodległości, albo zniesienie ogłoszone przez zwycięskie państwo wobec pokonanego i jego sojuszników. Jedna rzecz jest pewna: historycznie biorąc zadłużenie zawsze odgrywało ważną rolę w niepokojach społecznych lub politycznych.

La longue tradition des annulations de dettes en Mésopotamie et en Egypte du 3e au 1er millénaire av. J-C

Il est essentiel de percer l’écran de fumée de l’histoire racontée par les créanciers et rétablir la vérité historique. Des annulations généralisées de dette ont eu lieu de manière répétée dans l’histoire.

 

Hammourabi, roi de Babylone, et les annulations de dette

Le Code Hammourabi se trouve au musée du Louvre à Paris. En fait, le terme « code » est inapproprié, car Hammourabi nous a légué plutôt un ensemble de règles et de jugements concernant les relations entre les pouvoirs publics et les citoyens. Le règne d’Hammourabi, « roi » de Babylone (situé dans l’Irak actuel), a commencé en 1792 av. J-C et a duré 42 ans. Ce que la plupart des manuels d’histoire ne relèvent pas, c’est qu’Hammourabi, à l’instar des autres gouvernants des cités-Etats de Mésopotamie, a proclamé à plusieurs reprises une annulation générale des dettes des citoyens à l’égard des pouvoirs publics, de leurs hauts fonctionnaires et dignitaires. Ce que l’on a appelé le Code Hammourabi a vraisemblablement été écrit en 1762 av. J-C. Son épilogue proclamait que « le puissant ne peut pas opprimer le faible, la justice doit protéger la veuve et l’orphelin (…) afin de rendre justice aux opprimés ». Grâce au déchiffrage des nombreux documents écrits en cunéiforme, les historiens ont retrouvé la trace incontestable de quatre annulations générales de dette durant le règne d’Hammourabi (en 1792, 1780, 1771 et 1762 av. J-C).

A l’époque d’Hammourabi, la vie économique, sociale et politique s’organisait autour du temple et du palais. Ces deux institutions très imbriquées constituaient l’appareil d’Etat, l’équivalent de nos pouvoirs publics d’aujourd’hui, où travaillaient de nombreux artisans et ouvriers, sans oublier les scribes. Tous étaient hébergés et nourris par le temple et le palais. C’est ainsi qu’ils recevaient des rations de nourriture leur garantissant deux repas complets par jour. Les travailleurs et les dignitaires du palais étaient nourris grâce à l’activité d’une paysannerie à qui les pouvoirs publics fournissaient (louaient) des terres, des instruments de travail, des animaux de trait, du bétail, de l’eau pour l’irrigation. Les paysans produisaient notamment de l’orge (la céréale de base), de l’huile, des fruits et des légumes. Après la récolte, les paysans devaient en verser une partie à l’Etat comme loyer. En cas de mauvaises récoltes, ils accumulaient des dettes. En-dehors du travail sur les terres du temple et du palais, les paysans étaient propriétaires de leurs terres, de leur habitation, de leur bétail et des instruments de travail. Une autre source de dettes des paysans était constituée par les prêts octroyés à titre privé par de hauts fonctionnaires et des dignitaires afin de s’enrichir et de s’approprier les biens des paysans en cas de non remboursement de ces dettes. L’impossibilité dans laquelle se trouvaient les paysans de rembourser les dettes pouvait aboutir également à leur asservissement en tant qu’esclaves (des membres de leur famille pouvaient également être réduits en esclavage pour dette). Afin de garantir la paix sociale, notamment en évitant une détérioration des conditions de vie des paysans, le pouvoir en place annulait périodiquement toutes les dettes et restaurait les droits des paysans.

Les annulations générales dedettese sont échelonnées en Mésopotamie sur 1000 ans

Les proclamations d’annulation générale de dettes ne se limitent pas au règne d’Hammourabi, elles ont commencé avant lui et se sont prolongées après lui. On a la preuve d’annulations de dette remontant à 2400 av. J-C, soit six siècles avant le règne d’Hammourabi, dans la cité de Lagash (Sumer), les plus récentes remontent à 1400 av. J-C à Nuzi. En tout, les historiens ont identifié avec précision une trentaine d’annulations générales de dette en Mésopotamie entre 2400 et 1400 av. J-C. On peut suivre Michael Hudson |2| quand il affirme que les annulations générales de dette constituent une des caractéristiques principales des sociétés de l’Âge de bronze en Mésopotamie. On retrouve d’ailleurs dans les différentes langues mésopotamiennes des expressions qui désignent ces annulations pour effacer l’ardoise et remettre les compteurs à zéro : amargi à Lagash (Sumer), nig-sisa à Ur, andurarum à Ashur, misharum à Babylone, shudutu à Nuzi.

Ces proclamations d’annulation de dette étaient l’occasion de grandes festivités, généralement à la fête annuelle du printemps. Sous la dynastie de la famille d’Hammourabi a été instaurée la tradition de détruire les tablettes sur lesquelles étaient inscrites les dettes. En effet, les pouvoirs publics tenaient une comptabilité précise des dettes sur des tablettes qui étaient conservées dans le temple. Hammourabi meurt en 1749 av. J-C après 42 ans de règne. Son successeur, Samsuiluna, annule toutes les dettes à l’égard de l’Etat et décrète la destruction de toutes les tablettes de dettes sauf celles concernant les dettes commerciales.

Quand Ammisaduqa, le dernier gouvernant de la dynastie Hammourabi, accède au trône en 1646 av. J-C, l’annulation générale des dettes qu’il proclame est très détaillée. Il s’agit manifestement d’éviter que certains créanciers profitent de certaines failles. Le décret d’annulation précise que les créanciers officiels et les collecteurs de taxes qui ont expulsé des paysans doivent les indemniser et leur rendre leurs biens sous peine d’être exécutés. Si un créancier a accaparé un bien par la pression, il doit le restituer et/ou le rembourser en entier, faute de quoi il devait être mis à mort.

A la suite de ce décret, des commissions ont été mises en place afin de réviser tous les contrats immobiliers et d’éliminer ceux qui tombaient sous le coup de la proclamation d’annulation de dette et de restauration de la situation antérieure, statu quo ante. La mise en pratique de ce décret était facilitée par le fait qu’en général, les paysans spoliés par les créanciers continuaient à travailler sur leurs terres bien qu’elles soient devenues la propriété du créancier. Dès lors, en annulant les contrats et en obligeant les créanciers à indemniser les victimes, les pouvoirs publics restauraient les droits des paysans. La situation se dégradera un peu plus de deux siècles plus tard.

Les limites des actes d’annulation dedettes

En Mésopotamie, durant l’Âge de bronze, les esclaves pour dettes étaient libérés mais pas les autres types d’esclaves (notamment les prises de guerre). Cependant, les actes d’annulation de dette ne doivent pas être présentés comme des décisions faisant progresser l’émancipation sociale, il s’agissait de restaurer l’ordre antérieur qui incluait de nombreuses formes d’oppression. Néanmoins, sans embellir l’organisation de ces sociétés d’il y a 3000 à 4000 ans, il faut souligner que les gouvernants cherchaient à maintenir une cohésion sociale en évitant la constitution de grandes propriétés privées, en prenant des mesures pour que les paysans gardent un accès direct à la terre, en limitant la montée des inégalités, en veillant à l’entretien et au développement des systèmes d’irrigation. Michael Hudson souligne par ailleurs que la décision de déclarer la guerre revenait à l’assemblée générale des citoyens et que le « roi » n’avait pas le pouvoir de prendre la décision.

Il semble que, dans la cosmovision des Mésopotamiens de l’Âge de bronze, il n’y a pas eu de création originale par un dieu. Le gouvernant (ruler), confronté au chaos, a réorganisé le monde pour rétablir l’ordre normal et la justice.

Après 1400 av. J-C, on n’a trouvé aucun acte d’annulation de dette. Les inégalités se sont fortement renforcées et développées. Les terres ont été accaparées par de grands propriétaires privés, l’esclavage pour dette s’est enraciné. Une partie importante de la population a migré vers le nord-ouest, vers Canaan avec des incursions vers l’Egypte (les Pharaons s’en plaignaient).
Au cours des siècles qui suivirent, considérés par les historiens de la Mésopotamie comme des temps obscurs (Dark Ages) -à cause de la réduction des traces écrites-, on a néanmoins la preuve de luttes sociales violentes entre créanciers et endettés.

Egypte: la pierre de Rosette confirme la tradition des annulations dedette

La pierre de Rosette qui a été accaparée par des membres de l’armée napoléonienne en 1799 lors de la campagne d’Egypte a été déchiffrée en 1822 par Jean-François Champollion. Elle se trouve aujourd’hui au British Museum à Londres. Le travail de traduction a été facilité par le fait que la pierre présente le même texte en trois langues : l’égyptien ancien, l’égyptien populaire et le grec du temps d’Alexandre le Grand.
Le contenu de la pierre de Rosette confirme la tradition d’annulation des dettes qui s’est instaurée dans l’Egypte des Pharaons à partir du VIIIe siècle av. J-C, avant sa conquête par Alexandre le Grand au IVe siècle av. J-C. On y lit que le pharaon Ptolémée V, en 196 av. J-C, a annulé les dettes dues au trône par le peuple d’Egypte et au-delà.

Bien que la société égyptienne du temps des Pharaons fût très différente de la société mésopotamienne de l’Âge de bronze, on retrouve la trace évidente d’une tradition de proclamation d’amnistie qui précède les annulations générales de dette. Ramsès IV (1153-1146 av. J-C) a proclamé que ceux qui ont fui peuvent rentrer au pays. Ceux qui étaient emprisonnés sont libérés. Son père Ramsès III (1184 –1153 av. J-C) a fait de même. A noter qu’au 2e millénaire, il semble qu’il n’y avait pas d’esclavage pour dette en Egypte. Les esclaves étaient des prises de guerre. Les proclamations de Ramsès III et IV concernaient l’annulation des arriérés de taxes dues au Pharaon, la libération des prisonniers politiques, la possibilité pour les personnes condamnées à l’exil de rentrer au pays.

Ce n’est qu’à partir du 8ème siècle av. J-C, qu’on trouve en Egypte des proclamations d’annulation de dettes et de libération des esclaves pour dette. C’est le cas du règne du pharaon Bocchoris (717-11 av. J-C), dont le nom a été hellénisé.
Une des motivations fondamentales des annulations de dette était que le pharaon voulait disposer d’une paysannerie capable de produire suffisamment de nourriture et disponible à l’occasion pour participer à des campagnes militaires. Pour ces deux raisons, il fallait éviter que les paysans soient expulsés de leurs terres sous la coupe des créanciers.

Dans une autre partie de la région, on constate que les empereurs assyriens du 1er millénaire av. J-C ont également adopté la tradition d’annulations des dettes. Il en a été de même à Jérusalem, au 5e siècle av. J-C. Pour preuve, en 432 av. J-C, Néhémie, certainement influencé par l’ancienne tradition mésopotamienne, proclame l’annulation des dettes des Juifs endettés à l’égard de leurs riches compatriotes. C’est à cette époque qu’est rédigée la Torah. La tradition des annulations généralisées de dette fera partie de la religion juive et des premiers textes du christianisme via le Lévitique qui proclame l’obligation d’annuler les dettes tous les sept ans et à chaque jubilé, soit tous les 50 ans.

Conclusion

Aujourd’hui, le remboursement de la dette constitue indéniablement un tabou. Il est présenté par les chefs d’État et de gouvernement, les banques centrales, le FMI et la presse dominante comme inévitable, indiscutable, obligatoire. Les citoyens et citoyennes devraient se résigner au paiement de la dette. La seule discussion possible porte sur la façon de moduler la répartition des sacrifices nécessaires afin de dégager suffisamment de moyens budgétaires pour tenir les engagements pris par la nation endettée. Les gouvernements qui ont emprunté ont été élus démocratiquement, les actes qu’ils ont posés sont donc légitimes. Il faut payer.

Il est essentiel de percer l’écran de fumée de l’histoire racontée par les créanciers et rétablir la vérité historique. Des annulations généralisées de dette ont eu lieu de manière répétée dans l’histoire. Ces annulations correspondent à différents contextes. Prime  factors are all the factors of a number that are prime numbers.  Prime numbers are numbers  that can be divided exactly only by  themselves and 1. For example, 7 is  a prime number because it can be  divided only by 1 and itself. But 9 is  not a prime number because it can  also be divided by 3.  The first ten prime numbers are  1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19, and 23. 

 To find the prime factors of 260,  the number of days in the Mayan ritual calendar, begin by dividing 260  by 2. Keep dividing by 2 until the  result is an odd number. Then try dividing that odd number  by the next prime number—3. The Babylonian astronomical diaries comprise a group of cuneiform texts which record natural events in time spans from months to a whole year.
The most important among these texts are astronomically relevant observations as well as meteorological observations which mainly relate to changes of wind or rain. In addition, monthly summaries state market prices of key commodities and particularly serious state events such as wars and famines.
The diaries systematically record these events in canonical form and thus enable us to theoretically evaluate the observations. The period we observed ranges from the 6th century BCE to 60 BCE. This group of texts is the only ancient text corpus comprising systematical daily observations over a long period of time. The texts may rightly be considered to mark the empirical peak of ancient astronomy. Babylonian DiariesThe Era of Nabonassar. This era serves, in astronomical, the same purpose as the Olympiads in civil history.

Nabonassar era – a system of counting years used in Ancient Egypt, of particular importance in astronomy and chronology because of its use by the Alexandrian geographer Claudius Ptolemy. The beginning of the era was 1 tot 748 BC.  The Nabonassar era was reckoned from the beginning of the reign of the Babylonian king Nabonassar (748 BCE), with its beginning being the New Year of the Egyptian calendar (1st day of the month tot). Because the Egyptian year was 365 days long (there were no leap years), the New Year (1 tot) systematically moved backwards in relation to the seasons; at the beginning of the era, it fell on February 26, and by the time Claudius Ptolemy used it, in 160 BC, it coincided with July 13 of the Julian calendar[2]. Ptolemy used the Nabonassar era in the Canon of Kings he compiled which was a compilation of Babylonian, Assyrian, Persian, Macedonian and Roman rulers important for chronology. He also used it in his observations. Nabonassar’s era was used by astronomers throughout the Middle Ages. Copernicus also worked on its intricacies [style to be improved] in order to benefit from Ptolemy’s observations.

CLASSICAL ERAS

• The oldest of the three is the Era of Nabonassar, which by recent recomputation by historians is now counted to start from 749 B.C. instead of 747 B.C. as stated in older almanacs; and oddly, Nabonassar himself—one of the most insignificant of rulers—had nothing whatever to do with initiating the era.
  This eras was actually defined by the Greeks. Nabonassar, a Babylonian king, had been dead for around nine centuries when the great classical astronomer, Claudius Ptolemy, decided about A.D. 150 to compile dated lists of the Babylonian, Persian, Greek, and Roman kings and rulers. He went as far back as he could locate any references to them, for the purpose of providing cross-checks on the ancient astronomical observation of which he was making a study. The resulting “Canon of the Kings,” as it is called, has been ever since an invaluable resource for historians. The oldest dates in it are those in the Babylonian king list, which commences with Nabonassar in a year that Ptolemy calculated was six years later than the founding of Rome, i.e. 747 B.C., but which is now believed to have been actually 749 B.C.
  Nabonassar was a mere puppet-king of Babylonia under the Assyrian conqueror Tiglath-Pileser IV; the king list commences with him simply because there is a gap of several generations before, during which Babylonia fell into general decline and records were either lost or not even kept. Later, Babylonia revived and became great again, until it fell to the Persians two centuries down the line; and for all that stretch the list of kings was maintained from Nabonassar on, providing a continuous link from them to the Persians, and from the latter to the Greeks and Romans. That is why the Era of Nabonassar, with its proven correlations, continues to serve astronomers and historians.
• The second Era named for an individual was the Seleucid Era or Anno Grasecorum (“year of the Greeks” or “Greek year”), sometimes noted “AG.” It’s fixed to an exact year of 312 B.C., though there is some question whether it commenced in September or October. This era takes its name from Seleucus Nicator (i.e., the Vic-torious), one of the generals of Alexander the Great. After that great conqueror’s death in 323 B.C., his army chiefs contended over who should inherit and rule the Middle Eastern lands he had wrested from the Persian Empire. Seleucus, the most energetic and enterprising of them, and a bold and daring adventurer, seized Babylonia with a small band of followers in the late summer of 312 B.c.and established there the kingdom that by his death 30 years later had become the great Seleucid Empire, stretching from Turkey to India. The exploit that laid its foundation caught the imagination of the peoples of the Middle East so wholly and swiftly that in a few months they started using it as the Year 1 of a new Era, which even yet is used in some Greek communities in the Levant.
   
• The last of the three is the Era of Diocletian, named for the Roman Emperor who—somewhat on the model of Seleucus—emerged from obscurity as an army commander to proclaim himself supreme ruler of the Roman Empire in A.D. 284 and proceeded to dispose quickly of all competitors and to institute a series of thoroughgoing reforms to prop up the Empire’s disintegrating fabric. He also initiated the last great persecution of Christians; and both for this and for his renovation of the Empire, his reign came to be regarded as a break with the past and the starting point of a new computation of time. (The count was actually started, for reasons not very clear, from 283, the year before he seized power.) Except in the Middle East, the usage of the Era of Diocletian was, however, never very widespread, and it survives now only as a historical curiosity.

• Vision for Rewriting the History of Ancient Mathematics  by DAVID E. ROWE

OTTO NEUGEBAUER (1899-1990) was, for many, an enigmatic personality. Trained as a mathematician in Graz, Munich, and Göttingen, he had not yet completed his doctoral research when in 1924 Harald Bohr, brother of the famous physicist, invited him to Copenhagen to work together on Bohr’s new theory of almost periodic functions. Quite by chance, Bohr asked Neugebauer to write a review of T. Eric Peet’s recently published edition of the Rhind Papyrus (Neugebauer, 1925). In the course of doing so, Neugebauer became utterly intrigued by Egyptian methods for calculating fractions as sums of unit fractions (e.g. 3/5 = 1/3 + 1/5 +1/15). When he returned to Göttingen, he wrote his dissertation on this very topic. In 1927 he published the first of many researches on Babylonian mathematics and astronomy, a pioneering study on the evolution of the sexagesimal (base 60) number system (Neugebauer, 1927). These works received high praise from leading Egyptologists and Assyriologists, helping to launch Neugebauer’s career as a historian of ancient mathematics and exact sciences. Indeed, he would go on to revolutionize research in these areas, leaving a deep imprint on our understanding of these ancient scientific cultures to this very day.

 Neugebauer firmly believed in the immutable character  of mathematical knowledge, which meant that his field of historical inquiry, the exact  sciences, differed from all other forms of human endeavor in one fundamental respect:  in this realm there was no room for historical contingency. The methodological implications Neugebauer drew from this were simple and clear: once an investigator had  cracked the linguistic or hieroglyphic codes that serve to express a culture’s scientific  knowledge he or she then suddenly held the keys to deciphering ancient sources. And  since the content of these sources pertained to mathematical matters, one could, in  principle, argue inductively in order to reconstruct what they originally contained,  namely a fixed and determinable pattern of scientific results. Writing Before the Flood
NOT so long ago people believed that Moses was the first to invent writing, doing so in order to carry out God’s commandment: “The LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book.” (Ex. 17:14) But even before this, in the days of Job, this man of affliction had cried out: “Oh that my defence were written, oh that my case could be preserved in writing, cut with an iron pen on lead, or lastingly engraved on stone!” He also spoke of “the scroll which my opponent has written”. (Job 19:23, 24, Mo; 31:35, 36, AT) At times scoffers have sought to discredit the Bible statement that Moses wrote the first five books, by claiming that writing was unknown at his time.
However, in recent years archaeologists have unearthed proof not only that writing was known at the time of Moses and even Job, but that it was used many centuries before the existence of these two men, even before the flood of Noah’s day, in 2370 B.C. The questions arise, How long before the flood did writing start? Where did it start? What was preflood writing like? How was it done? Why did Jehovah have a preflood written record kept? This article, backed by the authoritative sources shown in the footnotes, attempts to answer these questions.
“This is the book of the generations of Adam.” The use of the word book implies writing. ‘Adam’s written history’⁠1* (Gen. 2:5 to 5:2) covers the period from man’s creation to the time of Tubal-cain, “the forerunner of those who forge vessels of bronze [copper] and iron.” (Gen. 4:22, Catholic Confraternity Version) Since Tubal-cain was a great-great-great-grandson of Enoch, Cain’s son, and Enoch was born near the time that Seth was born; Tubal-cain was probably a contemporary of Seth’s great-great-great-grandson Enoch, the son of Jared.⁠2* Since Enoch, the son of Jared, was born in 3404 B.C., Tubal-cain’s metal-working probably took place in the thirty-fourth century B.C. or a little later.⁠3* And as it is the latest event mentioned in ‘Adam’s history book’, that book was probably written in the thirty-fourth century B.C. or later; but not later than the end of the thirty-first century B.C., because Adam died in 3096 B.C. So ‘Adam’s history book’ was written probably between about 3350 and 3096 B.C.⁠4*
But this book is not the first one mentioned in the Bible. Genesis 2:4 says: “This is the book of the generation of heaven and earth.” (Bagster’s Septuagint) While this book of the “story of the heavens and the earth” (Confraternity) was not necessarily written in Eden,⁠5* it is probably older than ‘Adam’s history book’.
So writing has been done on earth since Adam’s time. Since he died 726 years before the flood came, writing must have started not later than that many years before the flood and possibly much earlier.
WHERE?
If Adam did not write the ‘history of the heavens and the earth’ in Eden, then we do not know exactly where writing started. Since two of the rivers which flowed out of the garden of Eden (the Euphrates and Hiddekel, or Tigris) rise in or near Armenia, the garden of Eden was probably somewhere in what is now known as Armenia. Genesis 3:24 indicates that Adam was driven eastward out of the garden of Eden, but the Scriptures do not reveal whether he remained there to the day of his death, or whether he moved about. His son Cain moved to the land of Nod, also east of Eden. (Gen. 4:16) While preflood human remains in various parts of the earth show that man had moved to various parts of the earth before the flood came, we know nothing of Adam’s movements after his expulsion from Eden.
Remains of preflood writing have been found in Elam (at Shushan) and in Shinar, and possibly at Ghassul in the southern Jordan valley and at Gebal on the Phoenician coast. Of these remains the oldest are those found in Shinar, if what was found at Ghassul was not writing.
At Ghassul a large number of inscribed objects have been dug up, including stones, pebbles, seals, bricks, and broken pottery. About 150 pieces of broken pottery (potsherds) have only one sign, others have from two to six signs each, and about 170 stones have similar inscriptions. All these marks are scratched on the objects. Most of the lines are straight, while curved lines are very rare.⁠6* This writing, if it really is writing, was done after Tubal-cain began to work in metals, for these marked objects appear sometime after copper objects do.⁠7*
Later than the inscriptions at Ghassul, inscriptions begin to show up in Shinar. Shinar was the flat plain built up by the mud, clay, etc., laid down by the Tigris and Euphrates rivers and was later called also “Babylonia”.⁠8* Apparently this flat plain was still under water, and hence uninhabited, when Tubal-cain was working in metals, for copper objects are found in the highlands to the north of it before any signs of human habitation appear in Shinar.⁠9* The first to settle in Shinar were highlanders from the region east of Shinar.⁠9* They began to go there during the time that the inscriptions were being made at Ghassul. If they could write, they must have done so on perishable materials, for no inscription of theirs has been found. Next, some mountaineers from the center of what is now Turkey came down into Shinar and settled in Erech and other cities.⁠10* A while afterward their writing began to appear on clay tablets, the first writing to show up in Shinar. From this earliest period of preflood writing in Shinar several tablets have been found: 570 at Erech, one at Kish (just east of the place where the tower of Babel was later built), one at Umma and one from another Shinar site.⁠11* This period is known as the Uruk (Erech) period.⁠12* In the next period, known as the Jemdet Nasr period, people from the eastern highlands came down into Shinar.⁠13* It was during this period that the flood came, probably toward the end. From the earlier part of the Jemdet Nasr period 34 inscribed tablets have been found at Erech and a few at other places in Shinar.⁠11* From the latter part of that period 194 inscribed tablets have been dug up at Jemdet Nasr itself,⁠11* a site in Shinar about 17 miles northeast of Kish.⁠14* As will be shown later, the very form of the writing showed that it did not start in Shinar, but that it was brought there from the mountains. Why, then, do the inscriptions not begin to show up as soon as the mountaineers move into Shinar? Possibly because when they first settled there they wrote on perishable materials that have not been preserved to our day, and it was only later that they started to use clay as a material to write on.⁠15*
WHAT PREFLOOD WRITING WAS LIKE
In Shinar the writing on preflood tablets consists of numbers followed by depicted objects. Thus the tablets were economic rather than historical.⁠16* If any historical writing was done there before the flood it must have been on perishable materials.
In the earliest Shinar texts found some of the signs are pictographs or pictures of the objects they are intended to represent, but many are used as ideographs too, that is, the sign is used to represent the underlying ideas associated with the things they represent as pictures; for example, a sign made up of three, four, or five intersecting lines, [Artwork—Shinar sign], was evidently a pictograph representing a star, but it was used also as an ideograph to represent the word heaven, sky, or god. However, signs appear in these inscriptions that do not resemble any object, signs that may represent words with abstract meanings.⁠17* Did they resemble some object in their original forms, or had they never been used as pictographs? Some 900 different signs have been found in the 570 oldest tablets from Erech. Perhaps this is not half the number that were in use. The 194 tablets from Jemdet Nasr have about 400 different signs. Of the 900 signs from early Erech 31 mean “sheep”, perhaps to distinguish their breed or quality. In the 34 tablets from Erech of the early Jemdet Nasr period, only three different signs are used which mean “sheep”. The reason may be that instead of using a totally different sign to indicate sheep of different breeds or qualities, the different breed or quality was indicated by another sign used with the same one for sheep.⁠18*
In the later Jemdet Nasr period a certain sign is sometimes used not to represent the word for which it stands but the sound of the syllable which was added to a word to make it plural.⁠19*
Since one sign might stand for several different words, the way that the writer indicated which one of the words he meant was to write with it another sign to indicate the general class to which the word belonged. Such added signs are called determinatives. The sign for god, [Artwork—Shinar sign], became one of such determinatives, and was used with the names of their demon gods. One instance of such use of it may appear on a tablet from Erech of the Uruk period. Another determinative appears on the tablets from Jemdet Nasr.⁠20* One of the evidences that the Shinar writing did not originate there is that the symbol for sun was originally a picture of the sun rising between two mountain peaks, [Artwork—Shinar sign].⁠21* If the writing had originated in Shinar no doubt the sun would have been shown rising from the level horizon. Another evidence is the fact that the sign for land or homeland, which was used to designate the flat level plain of Shinar, was the picture of three mountain peaks, [Artwork—Shinar sign]. This shows that these signs must have been used in the mountains before they were used in Shinar.⁠22*
On the tablets of the Uruk period no attempt was made to break up the text into lines or columns or to arrange the words in logical order. The signs were more or less uniformly distributed over the tablet without regard to the sense. On the larger tablets occasionally horizontal lines divided the text into two or three compartments. During the Jemdet Nasr period the larger tablets often had vertical lines dividing the signs into groups or compartments, though within such bands or columns the signs were still distributed without regard to order. The signs in the right-hand band were to be read first, then the signs in the next band to the left, etc.⁠23*
At Erech during the Uruk period the lines were drawn in the clay and were thin. During the early Jemdet Nasr period the sign was imprinted into the clay and with a coarser stylus; therefore the lines were thicker.⁠24* The curved lines were dropped and straight ones took their place.⁠25* It was not until after the flood that the lines took on the wedgelike appearance that has given the name cuneiform (wedge-shaped) to all the Shinar writing on clay, stone, etc., preflood and postflood.⁠26*
HOW AND WHY
The oldest tablets were mostly rectangular (square or oblong) one and a half to two inches long and one to one and a quarter inches broad. They were usually made of clay, though sometimes they were made of burnt gypsum mixed with sand. While the clay was still moist and soft, but not so soft that it stuck to the writer’s hand, the signs were written on it with a stylus. Before the flood the tablets were not baked, but just allowed to dry in the sun.⁠27*
From the foregoing it appears that writing started in Adam’s time, centuries before the flood, in or near Eden, but not in Shinar, and became widespread at least in the Near East. Writing was pictographic, at least in part. It was scratched on clay or stone or was put on some perishable material.
And why did writing get such an early start? Evidently so that Jehovah could have a preflood written record of events kept as a safeguard against the lapses of memory of imperfect men, thus insuring an accurate uncorrupted transmission of the vital facts to future generations of God’s people.⁠28*

Erech, Sumerian Uruk, Greek Orchoë, modern Tall al-Warkāʾ, ancient Mesopotamian city located northwest of Ur (Tall Al-Muqayyar) in southeastern Iraq. The site has been excavated from 1928 onward by the German Oriental Society and the German Archeological Institute. Erech was one of the greatest cities of Sumer and was enclosed by brickwork walls about 6 miles (10 km) in circumference, which according to legend were built by the mythical hero Gilgamesh. Within the walls, excavations traced successive cities that date from the prehistoric Ubaid period, perhaps before 5000 BC, down to Parthian times (126 BC–AD 224). Urban life in what is known as the Erech–Jamdat Nasr period (c. 3500–c. 2900 BC) is more fully illustrated at Erech than at any other Mesopotamian city.
The two principal Sumerian divinities worshiped in ancient Erech appear to have been Anu (An), a sky god, and the goddess Inanna (“Queen of the Sky”). One of the chief landmarks of the city is the Anu ziggurat crowned by the “White Temple” of the Jamdat Nasr period, which was one of great prosperity—gold, silver, and copper were skillfully worked, and seals and amulets reflected a brilliant miniature craftsmanship.
The temenos (sacred enclosure) of Eanna, another ziggurat, bore witness to the attention of many powerful kings, including Ur-Nammu (reigned 2112–2095 BC), first king of the 3rd dynasty of Ur. Ur-Nammu also did much for the layout of the city, which then benefited from a Neo-Sumerian revival. Various architectural developments were associated with the Isin-Larsa period (c. 2017–1763) and with the Kassite period (c. 1595–c. 1157). Later rulers, including Cyrus the Great and Darius the Great, also built in the district of Eanna.
